What to Do if You Receive a High Tax Bill

What to Do if You Receive a High Tax Bill

No one wants to owe the IRS money after filing their taxes, but it’s even worse if the bill ends up being an astronomical number. The kind of big number you cannot afford whatsoever. If you receive a tax bill like this from the IRS, do not ignore it as it can lead you to having bigger IRS and financial problems down the line.

If you can’t pay your tax debt bill, reach out to tax debt relief attorney Todd D. Babbitt to help you resolve your tax debt issues. There are a few things he can help you with to help you lower the bill, get rid of the bill, or slowly pay back the bill.

  • You can ask the IRS for an extension to pay back the bill up to 120 days, which may work for your situation.
  • You can set up a payment plan with the IRS. If the payment plan is still too difficult for you to financially pay off, Mr. Babbitt can negotiate better numbers with the IRS.
  • You can claim financial hardship or put a Currently Not Collectible (CNC) on your account. Once the IRS places you in a CNC status, they can no longer collect money or seize property or assets from you. If your financial situation improves, you will have to find a way to start paying off the debt or the IRS will begin the collections process against you.
  • You can apply for an Offer in Comprise (OIC) where you may be able to reduce the amount you owe. You will want to work with a tax attorney if you apply for an OIC as it can be a complex process.

You cannot ignore a tax bill. It will never go away on its own. Attorney Todd D. Babbitt can help you either reduce the amount you owe, create a payment plan with the IRS, or put payments on hold until you are in a financially more stable situation. He will work hard to find the best solution for your unique tax debt relief issue.
